ACAA Winter Meeting Charts Record Attendance
The American Coal Ash Association’s winter meeting in Tampa January 30-31 attracted 180 attendees – the largest tally for any meeting in memory.
Attendees were attracted by a strong slate of speakers, including presentations by U.S. Congressman David McKinley and representatives of the Environmental Council of the States, American Road and Transportation Builders Association, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Tennessee Valley Authority, Tampa Electric, Electric Power Research Institute, U.S. Agricultural Research Service and more.

Mark your calendars for ACAA’s summer meeting to be held June 19-20 in Norfolk, Virginia.
New Officers and Executive Committee Members Elected
Key officers and four new Executive Committee members were elected by the ACAA Board of Directors at the association’s winter meeting. The new officials will assume their positions after the 2012 summer meeting.
Lisa Cooper of PMI Ash Technologies was elected to a two-year term as chairperson. Hollis Walker of Southern Company was elected vice chairperson and Charles Price of Charah was re-elected secretary/treasurer.
The four new members of the ACAA Executive Committee elected at the meeting include Dr. Lisa Bradley of AECOM, Gary England of Headwaters Resources, Christopher Hardin of Haley & Aldrich, and Kenny Tapp of LG&E and KU Services.
Outgoing chairperson Mark Bryant of Ameren is initiating a project to review the Association’s bylaws for potential revisions. Any ACAA members interested in working on the bylaws project should contact Mark directly.

ACAA Office Move Scheduled for February 27
Preparations are well under way for the relocation of ACAA’s offices from Colorado to Michigan.
Effective February 27, 2012, the association’s new physical address will be 38800 Country Club Drive, Farmington Hills, MI 48331. Phone numbers will be established in the next couple of weeks. Email addresses will remain the same.
During the move, the ACAA website, phone and email service will be disrupted. From February 23 until March 1, Executive Director Thomas Adams will be available via cell phone at 720-375-2998.
Coal Ash in the News
Environmental group Earthjustice is taking shots at the American Coal Ash Association’s interpretation of declining coal ash beneficial use rates. See Earthjustice’s salvo here and a rebuttal by Citizens for Recycling First here.
Citizens for Recycling First was featured in the January issue of American Resources Review – an online publication circulated to more than 200,000 subscribers.
Coal fly ash is mentioned in this article as a key ingredient in a high tech new product – “smart paint.”
The President and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers authored a Detroit News editorial praising Democrats and Republicans for working together on measures designed to check the Environmental Protection Agency. Coal ash is prominently mentioned. Look here.

ACAA Co-Sponsoring Pair of Conferences
The American Coal Ash Association has been named a co-sponsor of the 1st International Workshop on Commercial Applications of Fly Ash Based Geo-polymer Concrete. The workshop will be held March 8, 2012, in Wuhan, China. Other sponsors include Louisiana Tech University, Dezhou University, and China University of Geosciences in Wuhan.
ACAA is also co-sponsoring the 14th International Conference on Alkali-Aggregate Reaction. The conference will be held in Austin, Texas, May 20-25, 2012. More information is available here.
Call for Abstracts on Sustainable Construction Materials
The Third International Conference on Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies will be held August 19-21, 2013, at Kyoto Research Park in Kyoto, Japan. The main conference themes include Sustainable Construction Materials and Structures, Durability of Construction Materials, and Maintenance and Life Cycle Management of Structures. Abstracts of 200-300 words should be submitted by July 27, 2012. Details about the conference are available here.
ACAA Honorary Member Professor Tarun Naik serves as a permanent member of the organizing committee and will be happy to help anyone interesting in submitting a paper.

Larry Harper, an ACAA Individual non-voting member, is a consultant doing business as LASH Marketing.
