"Although cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, there is an urgent need to lower the risk of this deadly condition," says Dr. Michael Eades, professor and chief of the Division Cardiology and Prevention Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. "The good news is that a diet high in fruits and vegetables, low saturated fats, lower in sugar may provide important protection against developing coronary artery disease."
The study found that a diet high in saturated fat and trans was associated with an increased risk of dying from any cause, while the risk of dying cardiovascular disease was increased by a whopping 81 percent.
"Saturated and trans fats have been shown to increase blood cholesterol and the risk of heart disease, while carbohydrates, including refined carbohydrates such as sugar and sugary drinks, have been shown to decrease blood cholesterol and the risk of heart attack," says Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and an author on the study.
Other contributing factors that may have contributed to the increased risk of death linked to fat included age, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol.
The study found that risk of death from heart disease increased by a statistically significant amount in men, while for women the risk increased by a statistically significant amount.

"For most people, a low-fat diet is not going to reduce their chances of getting heart disease," says Dr. Mozaffarian.
The researchers also found that effects of a low-fat diet were largely dependent on the level of activity and whether or not you were overweight physically inactive.
"It may be better to overweight than sedentary," says Dr. Schwieterman. "For people who are obese and need to lose weight, a diet that is very low in fat better than a diet that is very high in fat."
The researchers also found that effect of a low-fat diet on the risk of dying heart disease in women was not significantly different than the effect in men.
"It is still important to keep in mind that the effect of a low-fat diet in women may be greater than in men," says Dr. Mozaffarian. "For women who are trying to lose weight, choosing a diet low in fat is more beneficial than a diet that is very high in fat."
The low-fat diet has been widely touted as a means of preventing heart disease. And, many health experts continue to recommend a low-fat diet as key part of the diet for health and longevity.
